Gotta Run on Marathon Monday

Most of you are aware , I’m a Massachusetts gal . Masshole through and through .

3 years ago Boston was attacked by 2 cowardly brothers at the Boston Marathon . So many people hurt and maimed and in the end , 4 souls lost . Boston is not to be messed with , we literally shut the city down to find these assholes . And they did . And while only 1 of them is answering for their heinous crimes , thousands have risen above with their courageous will,  to show that we will not be brought down by hatred .

All this being said , yesterday was Marathon Monday here in Boston . Since I started working out , every Marathon Monday , the workout has a running element . Yesterday was no different , but in so many ways – for me – it was .

We all know my struggles with running . Since I resumed working out this year , I haven’t run . I’ve been rowing instead . But how could I not run in Marathon Monday ? So , I figured , I gotta run .

The workout was great .

It was an Amrap in 26.2 mins .  I completed 3 rounds ( def went over time, but not by much)

4 wall climbs – can I just tell you ? I got up there ! I didn’t think I would be able to move my legs up the wall . Now , of course , I wasn’t flush up the wall or able to move my hands back , but hot damn ! I was on the wall ! And it wasn’t even the struggle I remember .  Victory

18 wall balls – I don’t even know what weight I had , but these seem to come easier to me than they did before . Still hard , don’t get me wrong , but I keep moving.

16 Burpees – these were modified , but even then , these were still hard for me

26 lunges – I having some knee issues lately, my best guess is all this weight has caught up with me, I just need to work at it and get the weight off. I am sure they will stop bothering me. Anyways, I did reverse lunges on the TRX. And while modified, man did those kill.

Then – you guessed it. dun dun dunnnnnnn…….. THE RUN

IMG_4249

The run was 200 m . I completed the first one. Slow and Steady , not really a run, or a jog, but faster than a walk.  I was almost back when my calves started burning which was always my issue.  So, the next 2 runs, it was modified, so it was almost 200 m, prob more like 175 or 150. Anyways, I had to do it. As I am there dying, trying to not stop, all I could think about was there were people who literally lost  limbs completing the marathon. Folks who lost so much in the bombing and they are running 26 miles, and my fat ass can’t even jog 200 meters? Sweet Baby Jesus. I suck.   Between that and my ” Just Keep Swimming ” mantra, I finished. 3 runs, 3 rounds. And I did not stop.  I think that was the part that I was the most ” like wow” about .  I completed each “run”  without walking.  For me, this is GINORMOUS. Freaking Huge.

I was really thinking about this as I was doing the workout.  This time around, I feel like all these moves are coming easier to me. Even with the modifications, maybe that’s why.  Its still a struggle to do things, and honestly, I hope it always is, as I get better , more fluid with it and able to do things fully .  I feel so much more accomplished this time around.  Even Coach Jane was saying I am more confident.

And I really am.  Weird for me. To be confident in anything is quite different for me.  I have the worst self esteem and always have.  I think the worst of myself.  I am working on it. Working on me. And truth be told, I kinda like who I am right now and where I am going. I’m trying and I guess that is the best I can do .

Gotta keep at it! Looking forward to Lift Day on Wednesday!

Great Week!

Sorry I haven’t posted this week folks! I am back in the full swing of classes and work has been super busy.  So, I get home and crash, lol.

images-8

This week I really enjoyed the WOD’s.  Here is how I did:

Monday

OH Squat practice  30 lbs – Ugh, these are not easy.

Chin Up Practice – green and tan band 4×5 reps.  This gave me hope for my pull ups. I can so do the Chin Ups more easier than Pull Ups, I don’t quiet understand why, but I will take it.  I was able to get my chin over the bar for every rep.

AMRAP 8 minutes

6 Goblet Squats – 44 lbs KB

12 V Ups

I got 6 rounds! I was shocked as shit at that.

Wednesday

10 Ring Dips – green band

20 Burpee Pull Ups – I can’t do these without changing it to jumping pull ups, so we changed it to 20 Burpees and 20 Pull Ups.  My Burpees still suck, but not as bad.  I am still the slowest but my slow is getting better.  My Pull Ups need work though.

30 Wall Balls – 10 lbs MB

40 Double Unders

Time 19:09

Thursday

Cross Fit Total WOD

I loved this one! I really enjoy the barbells and I want to be stronger.  But this was really fun, testing your limits and seeing how heavy you can go.  We partnered up, I was with Nicole.  She was a great partner.  Here is how I did:

Back Squat – 130 lbs

Press – 55 lbs – who Nelly is that one hard!

Dead lift – 210 lbs !!!!!  SOOOO Proud of that!

I am so proud of myself for the 210 dead lift.  So, of course, I am telling people about it.  And the responses have mainly been ” Better be careful about your back” ” thats a lot of weight, do you think you should do that?”   WHAT THE EVER LIVING FRACK?!?!?   Why do people think that I was just walking along, minding my business, saw a barbell on the ground and was like ” Hey there, let me try to pick you up, with no training, no coaching, just let me grab it?”  UGH! Everyone that knows me and their brother knows I have been doing Cross Fit for almost a year now, so of course, I know the proper way to do it, and my coaches are right there.  It just stinks cause I am so proud of this and people will take any chance they get to kick you down.

And for the record, I used to have back problems, bad sciatica.  Haven’t had it for years, but here  and there twinges and pains.  Since I started this – I have had no back problems! So there , mo fo’s!

I have come such a far way, and I have so far to go, but damn, its exciting! I am so energized to keep this going.

My weight has plateaued at the moment, but honestly, I am not letting that keep me down, I just gotta keep going. I gotta keep swimming!

Doing good on my Weekly One More too! had some eggplant yesterday!

This Phoenix is rising bitches! Get Ready!

Past Week

images-3

I will admit, I had a bit of a meltdown over that running workout.  But I got right back to it and worked out Wednesday and Thursday last week.  I have to give a big Thank You to everyone who took the time to comment, message me and share your kind words over my feelings with my running.  You guys are awesome!

So, this is how I did this week:

Wednesday

Rope Climb Practice – I can get on the rope now.  Off the ground, dangling and swinging, but I cannot climb it.  I still have a long ways to go.

40 seconds on, 20 seconds rest – 3 rounds each station

Rowing

Box Jumps 12″ – I foolishly attempted the 20″ box – got a nice bruise and scrape from that one.

Burpees

Wall Ball Sit Ups – 14 lbs

Kettlebell Swings – overhead – 35 lbs

Walking Plank Push Ups

Even though each interval was on 40 seconds, it was hard work!  And my leg was really sore for the box jump fail.

Thursday

Barbell Snatch practice 35 lbs

3x 5 reps

20 Minute AMRAP

2 Turkish Get Ups R/L = 4 total  18 lb kettlebell

8 Toes To Bar – modified to knee raises

10 Pistols – used 12″box and 2 plates as a spot

I completed 5 rounds.

This workout I was dreading, I hate TGU’s, but I have to say, they were sooooo much better than I thought they were going to be.  I was super pleased with that.  Those have been dogging me for a while now.

Even though I started the week out with feeling like shit over my workout, it ended on a high note.

Great Week!

Some day, that will be me - with brown hair !

Some day, that will be me – with brown hair !

I got back into the swing of things this week.  Back to my classes, and boy did it feel good.

I also started my Weekly One More Challenge! Challenge yourself to do just one more thing healthier than you did last week, being it taking the stairs, running a bit further, or cutting out the soda, like I did this week.  Check it out! I would love to hear what your ” One More” is and how you are doing!

I felt I did really good in my workouts this week, maybe because I am getting back to my routine, maybe because I am progressing, who knows, but I will take it.

Here is how I did this week.

Monday

30 seconds work, 90 seconds rest for 3 rounds each

Pull ups = used green and tan bands did 5 reps for 3 rounds

Back Squats = 65lbs – 8 reps , 75 lbs – 6 reps, 75lbs – 5 reps

8 minute AMRAP

12 Kettle bell Russian Swings – 53 lb KB !!!

6 Hands release push ups

total : 5 .5 rounds , 72 KB Swings, 30 push ups

I have to say, since my gym introduced barbells to the work outs, I really enjoy them.  I find that it is easier for me to do those darn squats with a bar on my back, lol.  I still struggled with the pull ups, but not as much as I had, so,  progress!  The KB swings, I really went up in my weights, the heaviest I had done was 35 lbs, so to go to 53 lbs, was not easy.  That was heavy! but i did it…. I was still kinda shocked that I could, so even though I only got through 5.5 rounds in the 8 minutes, I was really feeling awesome !

Wednesday

Barbell Snatch Practice

We did 5 sets of barbell snatches 3 reps each .

3x 25lbs

3x25lb

3x35lbs

3x35lbs

3x35lbs

The snatch with the barbell was a new move for me, so I think next time, i will be able to add some more weight.

18 minutes, 3 rounds

30 wall balls – 10 lbs

15 Burpee Box Jumps – 12″ box

10 Ring Rows

30 wall balls – 10 lbs

15 Burpee Box Jumps – 12″ box

10 Ring Rows

20 wall balls – 10 lbs

So yeah, I did not get through the 3 rounds, not happy with that, but I am most definitely getting quicker at those damn burpees!  I still struggle big time with them, but I am moving quicker through them, thank goodness!

Thursday

Deadlifts Practice

5x 145 lbs

5x 150lbs

5x 150 lbs

I totally went up in my deadlifts! Whoo hoo! But man, was that tough! I went from 120 lbs to now being able to do 150 lbs. 🙂

Strict Press Practice

5x 45 lbs

5x 45 lbs

5x 50 lbs

I had not done strict presses before, alot harder than I thought, but I love learning new things.

12 minute workout

100 Medicine ball cleans 12 lbs

55 Vups

Whoa Nelly, those MB cleans are the devil.  I did them though! We were supposed to do 75 V ups, but I could only get in 55 with the time I had left.  And they really aren’t V ups as much as they are Shin Ups. but hey, I felt great afterward.

I have got a lot of goals this year! I am going to list them all, so I can hold myself accountable, but that is for another post.

How about you? What did you do this week to get moving?

This week

I am a bit behind in my posts this week , sorry about that . Hope everyone had a good Holiday no matter what you celebrate . On to of Christmas this week , I also had some personal stuff going on , so alas, just 1 workout this week . I was really pissed that I missed Thursdays workout . It had all my favorite elements . But let’s not focus on the negative . Due to how busy I was last week I had not been to class in over a week so I was really looking toward to Mondays workout .

images

Sweet Baby Jesus was it a freakin killer ! We were given 25 minutes to complete the workout . Here is how I did .
30 front squats 55 lbs
15 burpee pull-ups
15 wall balls
12 burpee pull-ups
12 wall balls
9 burpee pull-ups
9 wall balls
30 power cleans
My time was 22:10

I was ready to die at the end . I mean layer on the floor unable to move ready to die . But – I was so proud of myself for finishing under time . And I got in one hell of a workout . That felt mighty awesome !

But by far the most awesomest of awesome things to happen this week happened Christmas Eve . I stopped by Richardsons dairy in Middleton to pick up an ice cream pie for dessert on Christmas . I hadn’t been to Richardsons in a while . I use to go every Friday for “Frappe Friday ” . I would go and pick up frappes for the whole office , usually 8-12 . I had a list , I’d give it to the girl and we had a whole system down . Well , besides myself the office is kinda on a fitness kick . So , needless to say , it’s been a bit . So , I go in and who do I see ? My frappe girl ! And she greets me with ” Hey ! How are you ?!? Where have you been ? YOU LOOK AMAZING !!! ” yes ! The ice cream girl said I look amazing ! That was a Cloud Nine Moment ! And I am still floating .

This Past Week’s Workouts

images-9

Realized I am behind in my workout postings too.  Only made it to class on Monday and Wednesday this week.  Like I have said before, been really busy this week.  But here is how I did:

Monday

6 rounds for time

4 Wall Climbs

16 Reverse Lunges – 22 lbs DB

32 Lateral Hops

My time was 26:38.  We were only supposed to have 25 minutes, but Jane let me finish the work out.  I love that about my coaches.  They both have come to know me so well and they know I want to finish.  They push me until I finish. Lets break down the WOD.  The Wall Climbs – I feel I did better at these then I did last time I did them.  I was actually able to move my hands closer to the wall, of course not where they are supposed to be, but it was closer than I have gotten.  Progress!  Then it was the darn reverse lunges. UGH. WOD Killer for me.  Those darn lunges, front or back get me every time.  But, this time, I had 22 lbs in each hand when I did them.  This Was HUGE for me.  Last time I did reverse lunges, I don’t think I used any weight let alone 22 lbs,  so even though they took me forever and I wanted to die – I did them! More progress!  Then the lateral hops – now this is one of those silly little moves that in my head, I am like – jumping? Over a hurdle? Easy peasy.  Then you actually do it and its like – Cha! You crazy !  I have been working on getting more than 1-2 jumps in a row every time we do them.  And I have been getting better.  This night, I was able to get 12 in a row! Whoo Freakin Hoo!!! you know what I am going to say next – YUP = MORE PROGRESS! And it feels soooooo good!

Wednesday

Wednesday night was a hard one for me.

60 Plank Jacks

50 Medicine Ball Cleans  12 lb ball

40 Burpees

30 Wall Balls 12 lb ball

20 Push Ups

10 Turkish Get Ups  7.5 lb db

My time was 24:53

Then I did a 500 m row

So , yeah, this was tough.  Plank Jacks, I started really good, then it was a struggle.  The Medicine Ball cleans suck – I hate them.  Its a double squat essentially.  I do not like them in the slightest.  Then my WOD Killer – those darn Burpees.  Whenever there are Burpees, you know, I say it all the time, it takes me forever.  So, tonight, I took a different approach.  I had 40 to do which was so scary.  So, I did 2 at a time.  I paced myself.  And you know, I feel I did so much better with my burpees.   I was really pleased with that.  Wall balls, another enemy of mine. Ugh.  Push ups weren’t too bad.  TGU’s.  Sweet Baby Jesus. I can do them, but it has been a while.  I had a 15 lbs KB and had to go down to a 7.5 lb DB to get them done.  I just could not move.  I could not get myself up off the ground to stand straight.  I was pissed about that.  I still got the work out done in under 25 minutes.  So that is good.  Check out the video of Turkish Get ups – so you can see for yourself 🙂

Stinks that I only got 2 work outs in 😦  This week is not going to be much better either.  My oldest’s birthday is Monday, he has a concert Wednesday and then a Band Dinner Thursday that families are to attend.  So just Tuesday this week.

I tired working out at home today.  I did ok. I did some squats, push ups, sit ups and burpees. yes, burpees.  But I need my peeps pushing me.  I need my coaches .  It is not easy doing this at home, especially with the family around.  I know it works for some people – working out at home, but I am not one of those people.

While I won’t be in the gym this week as much as I want, it is really important for me to make better choices as far as my eating goes.  That , my friends, is going to be the biggest challenge. But, you know what I say…. Gotta Keep Swimming!

The Man Maker

Yes kids, Man Makers were the nemesis last night in class.  For those of you unfamiliar with Man Makers , let me explain.  So, I equate them to a Burpee on steroids.  Here is how they are done:

Yeah, I know – totally awesome, right?!? Cha!!!! They are a killer, especially for me, since they are similar to a burpee which I struggle with.  So, let’s go over how I did.  For starters, we did 100 sit ups.  I banged out 20 pretty quickly, then the rest were a struggle.  The goal was to do them as fast as possible to move on the man makers.  I am already feeling the sit ups, whenever I laugh, go figure.  So, finished those up, last as usual, then onto the man makers.

We had to do 30 Man Makers.   I really need to get myself some gloves for when we do these types of moves, I always use some towels over the dumb bells so my hands don’t hurt as bad.  So, I haven’t done man makers in a while but I thought I could do a few at a time and chip away at it.  I ended up doing 2 at a time.  And honestly, the hardest part was the clean and squat thrust for me.  I could barely get my arms up.  I thought I was going to drop the dumb bells on my head.  And , I have been using the 35 lb weight lately, but I knew there was no way that was going to happen, so I went down to 22 lbs.  All in all, I felt the Man Makers defeated me, badly.  I was the last to finish.  Which, that is fine for me, but still stings.  I completed the 100 sit ups and 30 Man Makers in 24:05 .

Then it was onto rope climb practice.  I tried again, more like Tarzan swinging from the vine, but at least I tried. I can get myself off the ground, I just cannot move myself up the rope, which of course, is the point.

Last night I left class exhausted and feeling defeated.  For as long as I have been doing this I feel I should be a lot better at things.  And some things, I totally am.  The reality is, I am still carrying 235 lbs and no matter what, things will still be a struggle.  I have to always remind myself that this is a lifestyle change and it does not happen over night.  Honestly, I see this process taking me years to be where I want, and from there it is upkeep.

I am determined to keep moving and keep going.  To Keep Swimming.  I use my ” Just Keep Swimming” mantra everyday.  I am afraid if I stop swimming, I will sink and never return to the surface. I have to keep going.

Returning to normal

images-3

It’s been a couple of weeks since I was in class . I did get my 5k in but I still feel crappy for not working out . And yes, I was sick, and still am (ugh) but heck, I miss it . I love working out . Who would of thunk ?

I hit another goal – 35 lbs ! Whoo hoo !!! I would love to be down 50 lbs by the end of the year , but not sure how realistic that is. But that is okay . Still going to try . Not going to be easy with the holidays upon us . I do love stuffing my face at the holidays , I am just going to make better choices . I know I need to eat better but for now I am content to make my better choices .

My return to class last night has left me with complete Jelly legs today.  That’s what I get for being out for a couple of weeks.

Here is my work out from last night and how I did:

100 Bodyweight Walking Lunges

75 Kettlebell swings – 26lbs

50 Sit Ups

25 Burpees

20 Push Ups

25 High Low Planks

30 Tuck Jumps

50 Squats

My time was 31:55.  This workout was a ladder, but I was struggling so much, my coach Linda cut the reps of the 2nd half for me.  Thank Goodness! It was a killer workout for me.   Thought I was going to toss my cookies in the middle of it.

So, lets break down my workout.

100 Walking Lunges.  We all know how lunges and me, we are not good friends.  But, going into this, I felt, that I could do the walking lunges and not have too much of an issue.  I started off good I felt.  I got to 30 and I was dying.  How on earth was I going to get to 100?  I kept going taking my time, but I got them all done

75 KB Swings – I am up to the 35 lb Kettle bell, but since I have not been in 2 weeks and since it was a high amount of reps, I went with the 26 lb KB.  After the lunges, I stood there ready to grab my KB and thought my legs were going to give out.  I took a minute then started chipping away at the swings, glad I went with the 26 lb, there is no way I could of done the 35 lb.  I hate feeling like I am going backwards, I like increasing my weight, but boy, am I glad I made that decision!

50 Sit Ups –  Sit ups, I can usually bang those out, but even these ones were killers.

25 Burpees – you know how this went – took me forever as usual.  I was dying at the end of them.

20 Push Ups – at this point coach Linda cut down my reps – Thank Goodness!

25 High Low Planks – these are insane, glad I didn’t drop on my face

30 Tuck jumps – oh my Sweet Baby Jesus! I could barely get my feet off the ground.

50 Squats – Surprisingly easier than I thought they were going to be, but still took me a while

All in all – it was a great workout.  I am glad I am back to class and back to my normal routine.

I feel good about this journey and where I am at.  Last nights class was clear evidence that I have so much farther to go.  But this is a lifestyle change, not just a fly by night lose a few pounds diet – so I am in this for the long haul.  I saw some friends over the weekend who I had not seen in months, they  said I look healthier.  Me. Healthier? It just goes to show how much this is working for me, inside and out.

Commit to it!

images-2

Well folks, I am absolutely exhausted.  Pooped! Tonights class kicked my ass.  But, I said I would post every day, and that is what I am going to do.   Gotta commit!!! And follow  through.

Here’s tonights workout and how I did:

we were given 30 minutes

50 Squats  ( my squats are getting better, but still need work)

40 Double unders ( i did 40 attempts, still can’t get them! Ugh)

30 Power Cleans – did 55 lbs

20 Burpees ( The Devil, the freakin devil. Burpees are my downfall, every WOD that has burpees, I am guarenteed to finish last or not at all)

10 Toes to Bar ( not there yet, so I did knee raises on the bar)

5 Rope Climbs ( Cha! That wasn’t going to happen, did 25 ring rows instead)

10 TTB

20 Burpees ( even worse this set, Thought I was going to puke and cry or both, but I kept saying, just keep swimming! and eventually I finished)

30 Power Cleans

40 DU – ( time ran out, so I did 120 regular jumps)

50 Squats

I went over time, thankful to new coach Linda, for letting me finish.  And my amazing classmates, Cristal, Maria, Nicole and Jen for cheering me on.  I haven’t finished that last in a while.  It sucked.  But it just cements the fact that I have so much farther to go.  I will get everything. I will be able to conquer these moves.  We have a long way to go.  Its gonna be a long swim.  But aren’t you excited?!?! Its going to be AMAZING!

On a side note : I was honked at today.  Silly, I know, but It has been a long ass time since I was honked at.  Hooray for strangers recognizing your efforts!!! LOL!
